Awaous tajasica
Also known as: Sand Awaous Goby, Caribbean River Goby, Wasp Goby
Origin: Central America, Caribbean coast of South America
Awaous tajasica inhabits the lower reaches of coastal rivers and streams from Central America through the Caribbean islands and along the Atlantic coast of South America. It is a true sand specialist, using its broad, flat ventral profile and muscular body to sift through and partially bury itself in fine substrate while foraging for algae, detritus, and small organisms. The body is cryptically patterned in beige, cream, and soft brown, providing camouflage against sandy riverbeds. This is a peaceful, undemanding species in a well-maintained aquarium, though it requires sufficient open sand area to exhibit its natural foraging behaviour. Like all Awaous, it is amphidromous, and the species has proven difficult to breed in captivity. It makes an attractive addition to a New World river biotope alongside other Caribbean stream species.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, GH 8–20, KH 4–12; low to moderate salinity tolerated; moderate current. Tank: 120 L minimum; fine sand substrate with some gravel patches; open foraging area essential. Feeding: Omnivore; sinking pellets, algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional frozen foods. Breeding: Amphidromous; captive breeding not documented. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with mid-water Caribbean species such as livebearers or small characins.
