Cyprinus carpio
Origin: Captive bred (Japan)
Taisho Sanshoku (Sanke) is one of the three most revered koi varieties in the Gosanke group, displaying a white body adorned with red and black sumi markings in a classic tri-colour pattern. This small starter-grade fish is popular among beginning pond hobbyists in Belgium and the Netherlands and will develop greater pattern complexity and depth of sumi colour as it matures over the coming years.
Begin in a pond of at least 1000L with appropriate biological filtration. Feed high-quality koi pellets; floating pellets allow monitoring of feeding behaviour. Reduce feeding significantly as temperatures fall below 10°C; stop feeding entirely below 5°C. Regular water quality testing is essential, especially during the first season. Provide shade to prevent sunburn and overheating in summer.
