Symphysodon discus × S. aequifasciatus
Also known as: Santa Efigenia Heckel Hybrid Discus, Heckel Hybrid Discus
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid; Santa Efigenia, Brazil origin)
The Santa Efigenia Heckel Hybrid represents the deliberate crossing of wild Symphysodon discus from the Santa Efigenia locality — famed for its particularly bold Heckel barring — with domestic coloured strains. The offspring retain a prominent central bar while displaying enhanced body colouration unavailable in pure wild fish.
This hybrid is more adaptable than pure wild Heckel discus, tolerating a slightly wider pH range while still preferring very warm, soft water. The combination of the dramatic Heckel bar with vivid domestic colouration produces a specimen that satisfies both wild-type purists and collectors of highly coloured varieties.
A rare offering, this strain is best housed with other discus in a blackwater-style biotope that honours both its wild heritage and domestic refinement. Strict water quality and a high-protein diet are essential.
Water: 28-31°C, pH 5.0-6.8, very soft (1-6 dGH), KH 0-3; blackwater conditions strongly preferred. Tank: Minimum 250 L, driftwood, leaf litter, peat filtration, dim lighting. Feeding: High-protein carnivore diet; discus pellets, frozen bloodworm, beefheart, live artemia. Breeding: Hybridisation can reduce fertility in some crosses; stable pair required; vertical spawning surfaces. Compatibility: Best with other discus; may be kept with cardinal tetras and peaceful catfish in a biotope tank.
