Pterophyllum scalare
Also known as: Santarém Angelfish, Tapajós Angelfish, Santarém Wild Angel
Origin: Wild caught – Santarém, Brazil
The Santarém Angelfish comes from wild populations at the confluence of the Rio Tapajós and the Amazon near Santarém, Brazil — a zone where clear Tapajós water meets turbid Amazon water, creating a habitat mosaic that produces robust, well-marked angelfish. Santarém specimens are prized for their tall, elongated dorsal and anal fins and crisp, high-contrast vertical barring.
This is a clearwater-adapted population that tolerates a slightly wider pH range than purely blackwater forms, making it marginally more accessible to the intermediate aquarist than altum or Rio Negro forms. They still benefit greatly from soft, slightly acidic conditions and will display their best colouration in well-maintained species aquaria.
Santarém angels represent an exciting geographic variant for collectors of wild angelfish and offer an authentic snapshot of P. scalare diversity across the Amazon basin.
Water: Temperature 25–28°C, pH 5.8–7.0, GH 1–8, KH 1–4; moderately soft clearwater conditions; regular water changes. Tank: 200 L tall aquarium; minimal decor with driftwood and sparse planting to showcase the elongated fins. Feeding: Live and frozen bloodworm, artemia, mosquito larvae; transition to pellets patiently. Breeding: Clearwater spawner; spawning substrate of broad leaves or polished slate; water softening improves hatch rates. Compatibility: Best with other clearwater Amazonian species; avoid territorial cichlids and fin nippers.
