Crenicichla santosi
Also known as: Santosi Pike Cichlid, Santos' Pike Cichlid, Upper São Francisco Pike
Origin: Upper Rio São Francisco, Bahia, Brazil
Crenicichla santosi is a mid-sized pike cichlid from the upper Rio São Francisco drainage in Bahia state, Brazil, described in the 1980s as part of a survey of São Francisco cichlid diversity. It shares the São Francisco system's moderately warm, slightly hard conditions and has evolved independently of Amazonian Crenicichla for millions of years, giving it a distinctive character.
The species presents a bold lateral stripe and attractive spotting across the dorsal half of the body, with the overall body colour a warm silver-olive. In breeding condition, males develop enhanced fin colouration and the lateral marking becomes more intensely defined. The fish is a capable and assertive predator of medium size.
At 22 cm C. santosi requires a 220 L tank. Its São Francisco origins make it tolerant of moderate hardness and neutral pH — practically useful for aquarists in harder-water regions. It is less frequently available than C. rosemariae from the same drainage but equally worthwhile as a captive breeding project.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 22–28°C; moderate hardness acceptable. Tank: 220 L with sandy substrate, flat stones, and driftwood caves. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets; reliable feeder. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; São Francisco conditions promote conditioning. Compatibility: Species pair; São Francisco biotope with robust companions possible.
