Hyphessobrycon sardinha
Also known as: Sardinha Tetra
Origin: South America (Mato Grosso, Brazil)
Hyphessobrycon sardinha is a relatively large-bodied Hyphessobrycon from the clear and blackwater rivers of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Its streamlined, compressed body and highly reflective silver-white flanks create a shimmering effect in midwater that intensifies when a large school moves together. A fine dark lateral line and subtle yellow fin tinting complete the elegant appearance.
This species is suited to medium to large aquariums where it can form active schools of ten or more. It is tolerant of a range of water conditions but thrives best in soft, slightly acidic water with moderate flow. Open swimming space is important; a tank that is too cluttered will inhibit schooling behaviour.
Feeding is undemanding — standard flake, pellets, and frozen foods are all accepted. Regular feeding and consistent maintenance produce the best schooling displays.
Water: 23–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to medium (GH 2–15, KH 1–7). Tank: 80 L minimum; open mid-water swimming space with planted background. Feeding: Quality flake, pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm, and daphnia. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; condition with live foods; fine plants as spawning substrate. Compatibility: Peaceful community fish; excellent with other medium tetras, corydoras, and catfish.
