Saulea vitrea
Origin: Africa
Saulea vitrea is a diminutive freshwater snail with a thin, somewhat translucent shell, making it a subtle and charming inhabitant of planted aquariums. It grazes on algae and biofilm on glass, substrate, and plant leaves without damaging healthy vegetation. Best appreciated in smaller, well-planted tanks where its unique translucent shell morphology can be observed up close. A gentle, beneficial snail for planted nano setups.
No special care requirements beyond maintaining good water quality. Avoid copper-based medications which are lethal to snails. Provide adequate calcium in the water column (GH 6–15) for healthy shell formation. Feed will naturally graze biofilm; supplement with calcium-rich algae wafers if algae is scarce. Population is self-regulating in a balanced tank.
