Astyanax scabripinnis
Also known as: Scabripinnis Tetra, Atlantic Astyanax
Origin: Brazil (southeastern Atlantic coastal drainages)
Astyanax scabripinnis is a widespread species complex distributed across the Atlantic coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil. It displays a metallic olive-silver lateral stripe and a distinct caudal spot on a silver body. One of the more cold-tolerant tetras available, it can be maintained in unheated aquariums in temperate climates, making it a useful species for subtropical setups. Robust and adaptable, it tolerates a broad range of pH and hardness. Best kept in schools in spacious tanks; it is peaceful and active, filling the mid-water layer with energetic, coordinated movement.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 18–26 °C; tolerates cooler conditions than most tetras. Tank: 100 L minimum; good for subtropical or unheated tanks. Open swimming with plant borders. Feeding: Omnivore; accepts all standard aquarium foods including plant-based flake. Breeding: Prolific egg-scatterer; spawns in neutral water. Very easy to breed. Compatibility: Peaceful; ideal for subtropical community tanks. Avoid mixing with true tropical-only species.
