Cirripectes variolosus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Scarface Blenny (Cirripectes variolosus) is a robust combtooth blenny with a mottled reddish-brown body and distinctive red-spotted facial markings that give it its common name. It is a constant browser of encrusting algae and cyanobacteria on rock surfaces, making it a valuable natural algae control agent in reef aquariums. Males are territorial towards conspecifics, so only one should be kept per tank unless the system is very large.
Provide abundant live rock with natural algae growth for grazing. A well-established aquarium with a healthy biofilm is ideal. Supplement with nori seaweed and spirulina-based foods if natural algae supply is insufficient. Semi-aggressive towards other blennies and similar-shaped fish; keep only one per system. Generally reef-safe with corals and invertebrates.
