Trichopsis schalleri
Also known as: Schaller's Croaking Gourami, Three-striped Croaking Gourami
Origin: Cambodia and southern Vietnam
Trichopsis schalleri is the least commonly kept of the three Trichopsis species, originating from Cambodia and southern Vietnam where it inhabits shallow, heavily vegetated standing and slow-moving waters. Males display bolder and slightly more vivid colouration than T. vittata, with stronger fin patterning and richer body iridescence in good conditions.
Like its congeners, T. schalleri uses vibrating pectoral fins to produce croaking sounds. These are used in courtship and threat displays and can be heard clearly with the room quiet. The species builds bubble nests and provides brief parental care. It is a delightful addition to a Southeast Asian biotope aquarium.
T. schalleri remains scarce in the aquarium hobby due to limited export from its range countries. Aquarists who obtain specimens should prioritise breeding to establish self-sustaining hobby populations. Care requirements closely mirror those of T. vittata.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderate — slightly acidic conditions preferred. Tank: 40–50 L, densely planted with floating vegetation and subdued lighting. Feeding: micro live and frozen foods; gradually accepts high-quality micro pellets. Breeding: bubble nester similar to T. vittata; condition with live food for best results. Compatibility: peaceful; compatible with small Southeast Asian community fish.
