Schilbe intermedius
Also known as: Silver Schilbe, Intermedius Catfish
Origin: Africa, Nile to Congo
Schilbe intermedius is a widespread African schilbeid catfish, recorded from the Nile, Congo, and numerous other river systems across the continent. It closely resembles S. mystus in form — a streamlined, silver-bodied mid-water schooling catfish — but is a somewhat smaller species that can be accommodated in slightly less enormous aquariums while still requiring substantial space.
This species is lively and active throughout the day, schooling continuously in the mid-water column, which makes it an attractive and dynamic addition to an African community tank. Like S. mystus, it benefits enormously from being kept in groups and from setups with moderate current and high dissolved oxygen.
Schilbe intermedius has a wide dietary tolerance and accepts quality pellets, flake, and frozen foods without issue. It is hardy once established in a well-maintained aquarium and represents one of the more beginner-accessible schilbeid catfish. Compatibility with medium to large peaceful African species is excellent.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 22–28°C, GH 3–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 300 L, moderate flow, open mid-water swimming space, good oxygenation. Feeding: Omnivore; quality pellets, flake, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Breeding: Egg scatterer; not commonly bred in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium to large African species; may eat very small fish or fry.
