Schizolecis guntheri
Also known as: Schizolecis guntheri, Split-Lip Loricariid, Günther's Schizolecis
Origin: South America (Brazil, Atlantic Forest rivers)
Schizolecis guntheri is the sole species of the genus Schizolecis, a monotypic loricariid endemic to Atlantic Forest coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil. Its most notable anatomical feature is the divided or cleft lower lip — a highly unusual modification within Loricariidae that is interpreted as a specialisation for scraping firm, adherent algae from smooth rock surfaces, a dietary niche distinct from the biofilm-grazing typical of Otocinclus and its closer relatives.
The coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil where S. guntheri occurs are clear, moderately fast-flowing, and flow through Atlantic rainforest from the Serra do Mar coastal mountains to the ocean. These streams have rocky substrates, moderate hardness, and good oxygenation. The unique lip structure of S. guntheri likely allows it to exploit firmer algae films on smooth granite boulders that other small loricariids cannot efficiently process.
In the aquarium, S. guntheri is a scientifically remarkable and functionally distinct algae eater. Its cleft lip gives it a distinctive facial appearance and a grazing style that can be observed as different from standard Otocinclus behaviour. It requires smooth rocks for substrate, moderate current, and clear, moderately hard water — conditions that overlap somewhat with hillstream loach care. A monotypic genus of considerable scientific interest, it is a rewarding species for the dedicated collector.
Water: Soft to moderately hard at pH 6.0–7.5 and 18–24°C; well-oxygenated with moderate current; clear water with good visibility. Tank: 40 litres minimum dominated by smooth rocks and boulders; moderate flow from return pump or powerhead. Feeding: Hard algae on rocks primary due to specialised lip; supplement with algae wafers and blanched vegetables pressed onto rock surfaces. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with all similar-sized community species from coastal Brazilian or cool-water backgrounds.
