Tetraodon schoutedeni
Also known as: Pool Malebo Schouteden's Puffer, Stanley Pool Puffer, Kinshasa Puffer
Origin: Pool Malebo (Congo River), Congo/DRC
The Pool Malebo form of Tetraodon schoutedeni is collected from the vast shallow lake-like expansion of the Congo River known as Pool Malebo (formerly Stanley Pool) near Kinshasa and Brazzaville. This form inhabits calmer, less turbulent water than the main rapids populations and may show coarser, more widely spaced cream reticulations on the dark body. The quieter habitat of Pool Malebo may translate to a preference for lower flow rates in captivity compared to rapids-adapted specimens. Substrate should be sandy or fine gravel to mimic the shallow inundated floodplain margins it occupies. All other care parameters follow standard T. schoutedeni protocol: pristine water, hard prey, and absolute solitary housing.
Water: pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 24–27°C, soft to moderate; lower flow than rapids forms; excellent filtration. Tank: 120 L minimum; sandy substrate, smooth rocks and driftwood; moderate flow preferred over strong current. Feeding: Snails, mussels, clams, earthworms; hard-shelled prey weekly for beak management. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; Pool Malebo seasonal spawner. Compatibility: Solitary; aggressive ambush predator; no viable tankmate options.
