About

Sciaenochromis fryeri 'Eccles Reef' is a locality-specific form of the classic Electric Blue Ahli, prized by collectors for the especially saturated cobalt-blue coloration that develops in dominant males. Found along the rocky coastline near Eccles Reef in southern Lake Malawi, this form shows slightly deeper blue tones and a more pronounced red-orange dorsal fin edge compared to generic aquarium-bred specimens.

In the aquarium, males are intensely territorial and should be the only male of this species in the tank. They thrive in setups with plenty of rocky outcrops combined with open sandy areas, mimicking their natural rocky-transitional habitat. Water quality must be pristine, with high carbonate hardness and alkaline pH maintained consistently.

Females and juveniles are silver-grey with faint barring. This is a maternal mouthbrooder; females hold eggs and fry for approximately three weeks. Provide separate breeding caves or remove females post-spawning to protect the brood. Pair with peaceful to semi-aggressive utaka and Peacocks of similar size.

Care Guide

Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; perform weekly 20–30% water changes and maintain strong filtration. Tank: 300 L minimum with rocky caves for territory definition and open sandy midground for swimming; avoid overcrowding dominant males. Feeding: Offer high-protein carnivore pellets, frozen krill, mysis, and spirulina wafers; feed 2–3 times daily in small portions. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; condition pair on live foods, provide flat rocks for spawning, hold fry for ~21 days; separate female after spawning if aggression is high. Compatibility: Keep one male per species; suitable tankmates include similarly sized Aulonocara Peacocks, Copadichromis, and Otopharynx; avoid Mbuna.
