Sciaenochromis fryeri
Origin: Lake Malawi (rocky shorelines throughout the lake)
Sciaenochromis fryeri (Electric Blue Ahli) is arguably the most iconic Lake Malawi haplochromine, with males developing an extraordinary all-over electric blue iridescence that is virtually unmatched among freshwater fish. A specialised predator of mbuna fry in the wild, it hunts close to rocky reefs in the lake. Moderately aggressive and one of the most visually spectacular cichlids available in the freshwater hobby.
House in a large Malawi haplochromine setup (minimum 300L) with rocky areas and open sand zones. Maintain alkaline, hard water (pH 7.6–8.6, GH 8–20) typical of Lake Malawi. Feed a high-protein carnivore diet: quality cichlid pellets, frozen krill, Mysis, and occasional fish pieces. Do not house with small mbuna or very small fish that may be predated. Keep one male with multiple females.
