Sciaenochromis psammophilus
Also known as: Sand Electric Blue, Psammophilus Hap
Origin: Lake Malawi
Sciaenochromis psammophilus is a closely related but distinct species to the better-known Electric Blue Ahli, inhabiting sandy rather than rocky transition zones across Lake Malawi. Males develop a striking electric blue body overlaid with a yellow-orange blaze along the dorsal fin, a feature that distinguishes them clearly from S. fryeri in a community setting.
This species prefers open sandy substrates and intermediate habitat areas where it hunts small fish with ambush-style dashes. In the aquarium it needs ample swimming space and a sandy floor, making it an excellent pairing with other sand-dwelling Haps such as Aulonocara Peacocks and Lethrinops. The reduced rocky decor preferred by this species also benefits the keeper through easier tank maintenance.
Spawning follows the typical Malawi haplochromine pattern — maternal mouthbrooding with females holding for three weeks. Males can be aggressive to rival males, so maintain the species at one male per tank. Overall temperament is more relaxed than many rock-dwelling cichlids.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; consistent water quality is essential for color expression. Tank: 250 L minimum with fine sand substrate and open swimming lanes; minimal rockwork needed compared to mbuna setups. Feeding: High-quality carnivore pellets and frozen mysis or krill; supplement with spirulina to maintain color; avoid high-protein live feeder fish. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; spawn readily in spacious tanks; remove female to a nursery tank after 10 days to protect the brood. Compatibility: Excellent with Aulonocara Peacocks, Lethrinops, and Copadichromis; avoid aggressive mbuna or fish small enough to be eaten.
