Scleromystax macropterus
Also known as: Scleromystax macropterus, Longfin Cory
Origin: South America
Scleromystax macropterus is a sizeable armoured catfish from the Paraná-Paraguay river system featuring notably elongated dorsal and pectoral fin spines that give it an imposing profile. Its bold body markings and large size make it a centrepiece species. Like other Scleromystax, it prefers cooler, well-oxygenated water and a spacious setup.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to medium hardness; requires excellent water quality. Tank: 120L+, fine sand substrate, strong flow and filtration, robust decor. Feeding: Sinking wafers, pellets, frozen bloodworm, earthworm, and tubifex. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; males can interact competitively; keep with more females. Compatibility: Best with cool-water species; avoid small, delicate tankmates.
