Crenicichla scotti
Also known as: Scotti Pike Cichlid, Scott's Pike Cichlid, Santa Catarina Pike Cichlid
Origin: Atlantic coastal rivers, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
Crenicichla scotti is a robust, moderately sized pike cichlid native to the Atlantic coastal rivers of Santa Catarina and northern Rio Grande do Sul states in southern Brazil. It inhabits clear, well-oxygenated streams over rocky and sandy substrates, sharing these habitats with other endemic southern Brazilian fish species.
Adapted to the subtropical conditions of southern Brazil, C. scotti is comfortable in the 20–26°C temperature range and tolerates moderate hardness without difficulty — a practical advantage for European aquarists. The species has a clearly defined lateral band, fine speckling across the upper flanks, and an overall silver-olive colouration that appears attractive under good aquarium lighting.
At 22 cm it requires a 220 L species tank with appropriate décor. C. scotti is periodically available through South American cichlid specialists and has been bred in captivity. It is a solid, dependable representative of the Atlantic-slope southern Brazilian Crenicichla group and a worthwhile acquisition for collectors of this bioregion.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5 at 20–26°C; moderate hardness fine; good oxygenation important. Tank: 220 L with sandy substrate, smooth rocks, and driftwood; cooler than Amazonian setups. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and quality cichlid pellets. Breeding: Cave spawner; seasonal temperature variation assists conditioning. Compatibility: Atlantic coastal biotope; bonded species pair or with large robust companions.
