Crenicichla sedentaria
Also known as: Sedentaria Pike Cichlid, Ambush Pike Cichlid, Rock-sitting Pike Cichlid
Origin: Rio Tapajós drainage, Pará, Brazil
Crenicichla sedentaria is a behaviorally fascinating pike cichlid from the Rio Tapajós drainage, whose species name sedentaria — meaning 'sedentary, sitting' — perfectly captures its defining characteristic. Unlike most Crenicichla that actively patrol territories, C. sedentaria is an ambush specialist that adopts a stationary hold position among rocks and boulders for extended periods, relying on explosive short-distance strikes to capture prey that ventures within range.
This ambush strategy is accompanied by cryptic colouration: the body is mottled in subtle browns and greys that blend with the rocky substrate, making the fish nearly invisible at rest. Only the eyes and the rapid flick of the caudal fin during a strike reveal its presence. In the aquarium this behaviour is endlessly engaging to observe.
The tank for C. sedentaria should be heavily stocked with smooth boulders and rock formations — its preferred habitat — with fine sand in the intervening spaces. Warm, soft Tapajós-type water is needed. At 20 cm it is a manageable size but requires an experienced keeper who understands its unique husbandry requirements.
Water: Soft, slightly acidic (pH 5.5–7.0) at 24–28°C; good oxygenation; Tapajós conditions. Tank: 200 L dominated by smooth boulders and rock formations; minimal open sand. Feeding: Live or freshly thawed prey presented near rocks — triggers ambush feeding response; frozen foods once established. Breeding: Rock-crevice cave spawner; requires boulder-rich environment. Compatibility: Species tank; ambush behaviour makes it dangerous for any smaller tankmate.
