Sperata seenghala
Also known as: Seenghala Catfish, Aor Catfish, Giant Bagrid
Origin: South Asia (Indus, Ganges & Brahmaputra basins)
Sperata seenghala, known locally as the Seenghala or Aor, is one of South Asia's premier large predatory catfish, occurring throughout the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra river systems. It is a powerful, elongated species built entirely for speed and ambush, with an enormous terminal mouth capable of engulfing prey approaching its own body length. Wild specimens routinely exceed 180 cm and 50 kg, making this one of the largest catfish on the Indian subcontinent.
In aquaria, only the most dedicated specialists can adequately house adults. However, juveniles are regularly available in the trade and grow quickly — making long-term planning essential before purchase. The tank must have extremely powerful filtration, excellent oxygenation, and no objects that could injure the fish during its occasional bursts of explosive activity. Water temperature tolerance is broad, allowing keeping in both tropical and cool systems.
S. seenghala is primarily nocturnal and will spend daylight hours in dim recesses. It becomes surprisingly tame at feeding time, recognising its keeper and actively soliciting food. Its sheer scale, impressive barbels, and powerful presence make it a true centrepiece fish for the committed large-catfish enthusiast.
Water: 20–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, high O₂; heavy weekly water changes essential. Tank: 5 000 L minimum; very robust tank construction; large smooth caves; padded corners. Feeding: Whole fish, large prawns, freshwater mussels, jumbo carnivore pellets; feed 2–3× weekly. Breeding: Not feasible in home aquaria; commercial production uses hormonal induction. Compatibility: Will consume anything that fits in its gape; house alone or with very large companions.
