Sphaerichthys selatanensis
Origin: South Kalimantan, Borneo
Sphaerichthys selatanensis is a closely related species to the classic Chocolate Gourami from the blackwater peat swamps of South Kalimantan, Borneo. Like its congener, it demands extremely soft and acidic conditions (pH 4.0–6.0, GH <5) to remain healthy, and it will decline rapidly in tap water or hard, alkaline conditions. Its slightly more robust build and subtly different bar patterning distinguish it from S. osphromenoides. A genuine rarity prized by collectors of Southeast Asian anabantoids.
Maintain extremely soft, acidic, tannin-stained water (pH 4.0–6.0, GH <5) using RO water with peat, botanicals, or blackwater extract. Avoid any hardness — even moderately hard water causes rapid decline. Feed live and frozen micro prey: baby brine shrimp, micro worms, Daphnia. Provide dim lighting, heavy planting, and leaf litter. Sensitive to any deterioration in water quality. Not suitable for beginners.
