Chaetodon selene
Origin: Western Pacific
The Selene Butterflyfish (Chaetodon selene) is a rarely encountered species from the western Pacific, identifiable by its white body with a yellow-orange wash on the rear half and a dark eye bar. It typically inhabits deep outer reef slopes and walls at depths of 20–60 metres, making it infrequently collected. Its deep-water origin means it must be carefully decompressed during collection — an exceptional find for serious butterflyfish enthusiasts.
Requires a large, well-established FOWLR aquarium with abundant live rock and stable, high-quality water. Train to accept frozen mysis shrimp, chopped seafoods, and frozen brine shrimp early in captivity. Keep alone or with a single compatible mate. Avoid housing with aggressive fish. Maintain slightly cooler, stable temperatures (23–26°C) matching its deeper reef origins.
