Pangio semicincta
Also known as: Semicincta Kuhli Loach, Half-banded Loach, Humbug Loach
Origin: Malay Peninsula, Sumatra
Pangio semicincta is one of the most commonly available kuhli loaches in the hobby, native to the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra where it inhabits slow, tannin-stained streams and peat swamp forests. Its characteristic pattern consists of dark brown half-rings on the dorsal surface that do not extend to the belly, giving it a distinctive 'humbug' appearance when viewed from above.
This species is equally well suited to both beginner and experienced aquarists due to its hardiness and tolerant nature. It thrives in a planted community tank with other peaceful, small species — small tetras, rasboras, and dwarf gouramis are ideal companions. As with all kuhli loaches, a group of six or more is strongly recommended to encourage natural behaviour and reduce hiding.
Feeding Pangio semicincta is effortless: virtually any sinking food is accepted, and it will scavenge efficiently throughout the bottom of the tank. Regular water changes and a secure lid complete the care requirements for this charming, understated loach.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–29°C, soft and slightly acidic preferred. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand, leaf litter, live plants, tight lid. Feeding: Sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; excellent substrate scavenger. Breeding: Spawning reported in well-planted mature tanks; scatters eggs in plant roots. Compatibility: Ideal community fish; peaceful with all non-predatory tankmates.
