Crenicichla semifasciata
Also known as: Semifasciata Pike Cichlid, Half-banded Pike Cichlid, Plata Semi-bar Pike Cichlid
Origin: Río de la Plata drainage, Argentina/Uruguay
Crenicichla semifasciata is a distinctive pike cichlid from the Río de la Plata system of Argentina and Uruguay, characterised by a partially banded pattern on the posterior portion of the body — partial dark vertical bars that fade toward the lateral midline, giving the fish a unique appearance unlike the fully striped or fully spotted pattern of most congeners. A well-defined lateral stripe runs the full body length from snout to caudal base.
As a southern Plata-basin species, C. semifasciata is entirely adapted to cooler subtropical water. Temperatures of 18–26°C are ideal, with the lower end of this range perfectly tolerated. The species inhabits the sandy-bottomed margins and rocky stretches of larger Plata tributaries, coexisting with a range of robust South American cichlids and large characins.
Reaching 25 cm, C. semifasciata needs a 300 L aquarium. Its tolerance of hard, neutral water makes it one of the more practically accessible larger Crenicichla for European aquarists without water softening equipment. It is periodically available from specialists and has been bred in captivity.
Water: pH 6.0–7.8 at 18–26°C; moderate-to-hard water fine; no RO equipment needed in most areas. Tank: 300 L with sandy substrate, driftwood, and smooth rocks. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and large cichlid pellets; feeds reliably. Breeding: Cave spawner; biparental care; seasonal temperature cycle helpful. Compatibility: Plata biotope with large robust cichlids; bonded pair as species tank.
