Polypterus senegalus
Also known as: Senegal Bichir, Grey Bichir, Cuvier's Bichir
Origin: Africa
Polypterus senegalus is a prehistoric air-breathing fish native to West and Central Africa, belonging to a lineage that has remained virtually unchanged for over 400 million years. It uses a modified swim bladder as a primitive lung and must have access to the surface to breathe. A robust and tolerant species, it is the best starting point for anyone interested in polypterids.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.5-7.5, soft to moderately hard; tolerates a wide range. Tank: Minimum 200L, fine soft substrate, caves and driftwood for shelter, tight-fitting lid essential. Feeding: Carnivore; earthworms, frozen bloodworm, prawns, sinking carnivore pellets once settled. Behaviour: Peaceful with fish too large to swallow; may nip the fins of slow, long-finned tankmates. Compatibility: Best with other robust fish of similar or larger size; avoid small tetras or shrimp.
