Polypterus senegalus
Origin: Sub-Saharan Africa
Polypterus senegalus, the Senegal Bichir, is a remarkable prehistoric-looking fish from Africa with a long, serpentine body, armoured scales, and a row of distinctive dorsal finlets. A true living fossil — the Polypterus lineage dates back 100+ million years. It breathes supplemental air via a primitive lung, audibly gulping at the surface. Despite its fearsome appearance it is peaceful with fish too large to swallow. Hardy and adaptable, it tolerates a wide range of water conditions. Popular with large fish enthusiasts.
Secure lid — very strong jumper. Temperature 24–28 °C, wide water parameter tolerance. Feed sinking meaty foods: frozen shrimp, cockle, worm, sinking pellets. Will eat anything small enough to fit in its mouth. Sandy substrate for natural resting behaviour.
