Utiaritichthys sennaebragai
Also known as: Sennae's Serrasalmid, Utiaritichthys
Origin: Tapajós and Roosevelt basins, Brazil
Utiaritichthys sennaebragai is the sole member of its genus and one of the more morphologically unusual serrasalmids in the hobby. It originates from the Tapajós and Roosevelt river basins in Brazil and displays a strongly compressed, oval body profile adapted for a frugivorous and herbivorous diet in the flooded forest margins of its native habitat.
Very rarely imported, it requires similar care to pacus and large Myleus: large, clean aquaria with strong filtration, a plant-based diet, and the company of conspecifics. Its rarity and taxonomic uniqueness make it a genuine highlight for any specialist serrasalmid collection.
Not subject to piranha restrictions; export from Brazil may be regulated.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft water preferred; clean, well-oxygenated conditions essential for optimal health. Tank: Minimum 500L; robust external filtration; open swimming space with minimal décor; school of 3+. Feeding: Herbivore; fruits, vegetables, quality pellets, spirulina-based foods; varied diet essential. Breeding: No captive records; rarity makes ethical management of any specimens paramount. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with other large, non-aggressive South American species.
