Chilatherina sentaniensis
Also known as: Sentani Rainbowfish, Lake Sentani Rainbowfish
Origin: Indonesia (West Papua, Lake Sentani)
Chilatherina sentaniensis is endemic to Lake Sentani, the large lowland lake adjacent to the city of Jayapura in West Papua, Indonesia. The lake has experienced significant habitat degradation, including introduced fish species and water quality decline from urbanisation, resulting in this beautiful rainbowfish being listed as vulnerable. Captive populations maintained by dedicated hobbyists are therefore of real conservation importance.
Mature males are genuinely spectacular fish, developing a deep, well-arched body coloured with alternating gold and blue iridescent scale rows, vivid orange-red fins, and in some individuals a faint barred pattern reminiscent of other Chilatherina. The species prefers warm, clear, moderately hard water and a spacious aquarium with strong filtration.
Chilatherina sentaniensis is occasionally available through specialist importers and hobbyist breeders with an interest in West Papuan fauna. Responsible keepers maintain genetic diversity within their groups, avoid hybridisation with other Chilatherina species, and participate in community conservation discussions.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 22–27°C, moderately hard; stable water chemistry is critical for long-term health. Tank: Minimum 200 L; warm, well-filtered tank; open swimming space with plants at periphery. Feeding: Quality flake and pellets; enrich with live daphnia, brine shrimp, and small bloodworms. Breeding: Egg scatterer on fine plants; maintain genetic records; avoid hybridisation with related species. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other West Papuan rainbowfish; avoid small or nippy tankmates.
