Barbus serengetiensis
Also known as: Serengeti Barb, Tanzania Barb
Origin: Tanzania (Serengeti region)
Barbus serengetiensis is native to river systems of the Serengeti ecosystem in northern Tanzania, where it inhabits slow to moderately flowing streams, floodplain pools, and vegetated river margins. It is a modest-sized barb with a pale golden-silver body and scattered faint lateral spots that become more pronounced in breeding adults. Males develop a subtle yellowish flush on the flanks during the spawning period.
In the aquarium, Barbus serengetiensis is hardy and adaptable, tolerating a range of standard tropical conditions. It is a schooling species that benefits from groups of six or more, where it displays confident mid-water activity and natural social interaction. A planted African biotope setup with open swimming space and a sandy substrate suits it well.
This species is an uncomplicated omnivore accepting flake, micro-pellets, and frozen invertebrates. Its modest size, peaceful temperament, and African origin make it an ideal companion for West and East African cichlids, tetras, and killifish in community biotope displays.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderate hardness; standard tropical conditions. Tank: 80 L minimum; planted with open swimming; sandy substrate. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen daphnia, bloodworm. Breeding: Egg-scatterer over fine plants; straightforward if adults are well conditioned. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent in East African community tanks with tetras, killifish, and smaller cichlids.
