Seriatopora hystrix
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Red Sea
Seriatopora hystrix is the true 'Bird's Nest Coral', forming intricate, lattice-like colonies of extremely fine, needle-tipped branches that create an appearance reminiscent of a woven bird's nest. It is fragile to physical disturbance but surprisingly tolerant of varying light and flow conditions. The pink form is the most commonly traded and adds extraordinary textural complexity to reef compositions.
Medium-high PAR (150–300). Moderate flow — strong direct flow damages the delicate branch tips. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Do not place where direct jets of water can hit the colony. Handle with extreme care — branches snap easily. Frag by snapping branch ends; small pieces establish quickly. Keep away from aggressive LPS corals. One of the easiest SPS corals to maintain once flow is optimised.
