Hyphessobrycon eques
Also known as: Serpae Tetra, Jewel Tetra, Callistus Tetra, Blood Tetra
Origin: South America (upper Amazon, Paraguay basin)
Hyphessobrycon eques, the Serpae Tetra, is native to the upper Amazon and Paraguay basins. Its fiery red body, black humeral spot, and striking dorsal fin markings make it one of the most visually striking commonly available tetras. It has a reputation for fin-nipping, which is greatly reduced when kept in large schools of 10 or more with similarly active tank mates in a spacious aquarium.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 60 L minimum; some planting and open swimming space; avoid slow-finned tank mates. Feeding: Omnivorous; accepts flake, pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive and fin-nipping tendency; keep in schools of 10+ to reduce aggression. Compatibility: Best with active robust fish like barbs, danios, and larger tetras.
