Serrasalmus serrulatus
Also known as: Serrulated Piranha, Amazon Piranha
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Serrasalmus serrulatus is a moderately sized solitary piranha found across the central and western Amazon basin. It presents the classic Serrasalmus phenotype: deep silver-grey body, scattered dark flecks, red iris, and powerful dentition. Its serrated ventral keel is a characteristic shared with most serrasalmids but is particularly pronounced in this species.
Care follows standard Serrasalmus protocol: solo housing, soft water, meaty diet, and excellent filtration. It is less commonly imported than the Black Piranha but appears periodically in specialist trade. Its modest maximum size compared to S. rhombeus makes it marginally more feasible for large home aquaria.
Piranha ownership regulations apply; verify before purchase.

Feeding: Carnivore; whole prawns, fish fillet, silversides; feed every 2-3 days using long tongs. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Solo housing only; piranha ownership laws apply in many countries — confirm before purchase.
