Osphronemus septemfasciatus
Also known as: Seven-banded Gourami, Banded Giant Gourami
Origin: Borneo
Osphronemus septemfasciatus is a little-known giant gourami species native to blackwater river systems of Borneo, characterised by seven bold dark vertical bands on a brownish body. It is rarely seen in the hobby and commands interest among specialist labyrinth fish keepers. As with all giant gouramis, it requires a very large aquarium with excellent filtration.
Water: temp 22–28°C, pH 6.0–7.0, soft blackwater conditions preferred. Tank: minimum 500L; large open swimming areas with minimal décor. Feeding: omnivore — large pellets, plant matter, worms, prawns, fruit. Behaviour: semi-aggressive; territorial towards rivals; will eat small fish. Compatibility: keep with large, robust species only; best as a species tank.
