Heros efasciatus
Origin: Amazon basin, South America
Heros efasciatus in the gold form displays a warm golden-yellow body with reduced barring and intricate scale patterns, creating a regal appearance in large South American aquariums. Often called the 'poor man's discus,' the severum is significantly more forgiving of water conditions than its distant cousin and offers impressive size and personality for experienced community cichlid keepers. Herbivorous tendencies mean it may nibble at fine-leafed plants.
Provide a large aquarium (300L+) with robust driftwood, large rocks, and hardy plants such as Java Fern or Anubias that can withstand some nibbling. Maintain slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.5). Feed a varied diet of quality cichlid pellets, frozen foods, and blanched vegetables. Can be kept in pairs or with other large, peaceful cichlids. Semi-aggressive during breeding.
