Heros severus
Origin: South America (Orinoco and Amazon drainages)
Heros severus in its natural green form is a large, deep-bodied cichlid with an intricate pattern of thin horizontal lines on a green-gold body. Often called the poor man's discus, it is significantly more forgiving of water conditions than discus and offers comparable visual appeal with a bolder personality. A quintessential South American river cichlid with a devoted following among large-aquarium enthusiasts.
House in a minimum 300L aquarium with driftwood, robust plants (Java Fern, Anubias), and open swimming space. Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water. Feed varied quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworm, krill, and blanched vegetables. Suitable for large South American community tanks with similarly sized, peaceful species such as geophagus and leporinus. Aggressive during spawning.
