Thor amboinensis
Origin: Indo-Pacific (circumtropical)
The Sexy Shrimp (Thor amboinensis) gets its common name from its distinctive tail-waving behaviour — a constant, undulating movement of the abdomen that is entirely unique among marine invertebrates. This tiny shrimp features a brownish-orange body covered in brilliant white spots with white-rimmed edges. Naturally associated with anemones and corals in the wild, it is best kept with host anemones in the reef aquarium and is most naturally displayed in small groups.
Provide one or more host anemones (such as bubble tips or carpet anemones) for this shrimp to shelter in — it will associate readily with them. Can be kept in groups of 3–5 in systems with adequate anemone coverage. Feed supplementally with small frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp and micro-copepods. Acclimate slowly via drip method. Avoid housing with larger predatory fish or aggressive invertebrates that may target this tiny species.
