Shadow Catfish

Silurichthys phaiosoma is a graceful, elongated silurid native to blackwater rivers and forest streams of Malaysia, Borneo, and Sumatra. Its body is notably slim and laterally compressed, with translucent unpigmented fins and a subtle brownish coloration that provides excellent camouflage in dim, tannin-stained water. It is an uncommon species in the aquarium trade and highly sought by lovers of unusual Southeast Asian catfish.

In the aquarium, Silurichthys phaiosoma is a secretive daytime hider that becomes active at dusk, threading through dense plantings and root tangles in search of invertebrate prey. It is best suited to a planted blackwater setup with dense vegetation, driftwood, leaf litter, and dim lighting. Water must be soft and slightly acidic to match its natural habitat.

This species is peaceful toward tankmates too large to be consumed and is best kept with other small, calm Southeast Asian species such as small rasboras, chocolate gouramis, or dwarf puffers. Feed with small frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp — after dark for the best results. Its graceful form and unusual provenance make it a rewarding choice for the experienced aquarist.

Water: 22–28°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft acidic water (GH 1–8); tannin-stained conditions ideal. Tank: 120 L minimum; dense planting; driftwood tangles; leaf litter; very low lighting. Feeding: Frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp; feed at dusk into vegetation. Breeding: Not reported in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with small, calm species; may eat very small nano fish or shrimp.
