Devario shanensis
Also known as: Shan Danio, Myanmar Devario
Origin: Myanmar (Shan State)
Devario shanensis hails from highland streams in Myanmar's Shan Plateau, where clear, cool water flows over rocky and sandy substrates. Like other Devario species it is a large, active danio with bold blue-and-silver lateral striping that shimmers under aquarium lighting.
This species thrives at temperatures in the mid-teens to low twenties Celsius and does not require a heater in most temperate homes. Its active schooling behaviour and attractive patterning make it a sought-after alternative to the more commonly available Giant Danio.
Provide a long aquarium with good flow, plants along the sides, and open midwater swimming space to allow the school's full energy to be displayed.
Water: 16–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 4–15; moderate current, good oxygenation. Tank: minimum 80 L, long tank, plants at sides and back, powerhead or filter outlet for flow. Feeding: omnivore — flake, pellets, frozen daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm. Breeding: egg-scatterer; spawns over fine-leaved plants or mops in cool, clean water. Compatibility: peaceful; excellent with other temperate danios, barbs, and loaches.
