Devario shanensis
Also known as: Shan Devario, Shan Danio
Origin: Myanmar
Devario shanensis is a scarce and scientifically interesting species from the cool, high-altitude streams of Myanmar's Shan Plateau. It is a relatively slender devario with a pale blue-silver body and subtle iridescence that, while less vivid than some relatives, has a quiet elegance appreciated by specialist cyprinid keepers.
Its preference for cooler temperatures — ideally 18–24°C — makes it compatible with cool-water aquariums alongside White Cloud Mountain Minnows, certain rasboras, and hillstream loaches. A species-specific or cool-water community setup showcases its behaviour and colour best. Strong filtration and regular water changes are important.
Devario shanensis is more frequently encountered in scientific literature than in the aquarium trade. When available it is generally from small-scale specialist importers. Its conservation status in the wild is not fully assessed, making captive-breeding programs a worthwhile endeavour.
Water: Temperature 18–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; cool, well-oxygenated water essential; sensitive to temperatures above 26°C. Tank: Minimum 80 L; moderate to strong flow; well-planted; avoid heated tanks shared with tropical species requiring higher temperatures. Feeding: Accepts flake, pellets, and frozen foods; live daphnia and Tubifex welcome; feed small amounts frequently. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; cool-water conditioning with live food may stimulate spawning; rarely bred by hobbyists. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other cool-water species such as White Clouds, hillstream loaches, and cool-water rasboras.
