Danio shanensis
Also known as: Shan Danio
Origin: Myanmar (Shan Plateau)
Danio shanensis, the Shan Danio, originates from the upland rivers and streams of the Shan Plateau in eastern Myanmar. At slightly over 5 cm it is a medium-sized danio with attractive horizontal banding and good iridescence along the flanks. The Shan Plateau is a cool, elevated region, and this species reflects that origin by preferring slightly cooler temperatures than lowland danios. In the aquarium it is best maintained at 18–25 °C in a tank with moderate water movement and good oxygenation. It is a peaceful and robust fish that mixes well with other cool-tolerant cyprinids, hillstream species, and temperate loaches. Plant the tank moderately and leave generous open swimming lanes for the school. Breed as per other egg-scattering danios.
Water: Temperature 18–25 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–12; moderate flow with good oxygen levels. Tank: 60 L minimum; cooler community setup; planted with open central swimming space. Feeding: Flake, pellet, frozen daphnia, cyclops, and brine shrimp nauplii. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; cool, well-oxygenated water and spawning mop; remove parents after spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful; best with other cool-water cyprinids, hillstream loaches, and temperate species.
