Acnodon normani
Also known as: Sheep Pacu, Norman's Acnodon
Origin: Xingú and Tapajós, Brazil
Acnodon normani is a small-to-medium serrasalmid endemic to the rocky river systems of the Xingú and Tapajós drainages in Brazil. Its common name references a superficial resemblance between its blunt snout and incisor-like teeth and those of a sheep — an adaptation for biting off plant material attached to rocky substrates.
It is a schooling species that appreciates the company of conspecifics and requires a predominantly plant-based diet. Its compact size relative to other serrasalmids makes it more manageable, though it still demands good water quality and space for schooling. It is periodically available from specialist importers.
Not subject to piranha ownership restrictions.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft to moderately soft; Xingú and Tapajós origin means harder water tolerated but softer preferred. Tank: Minimum 300L for a school of 5+; smooth rocks and moderate flow; avoid soft-leaved plants. Feeding: Herbivore; spirulina pellets and flake, blanched vegetables, algae wafers; supplement with small amounts of fruit. Breeding: Not documented in captivity; schooling species likely requires group spawning conditions. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable for large South American community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive species.
