Pangio shelfordii
Also known as: Shelford's Kuhli Loach, Saddled Kuhli
Origin: Borneo
Pangio shelfordii is a seldom-seen kuhli loach endemic to Borneo, where it inhabits slow-moving, shaded streams and swampy forest pools. It is distinguished from many of its relatives by a series of wide, dark saddle-shaped blotches along the dorsum rather than the continuous bands seen in P. kuhlii. This distinctive patterning, combined with its rarity in the trade, makes it a sought-after species for kuhli enthusiasts.
In the aquarium, care follows the standard Pangio template: soft, slightly acidic water, fine substrate, plenty of hiding places, and a well-secured lid. The species is entirely peaceful and can be housed with any non-predatory tankmate. It is most active at dusk and into the night, though groups become more visible during daytime in a well-established tank.
Feeding is straightforward with sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, and small live invertebrates. Patience is key with this species — newly introduced individuals may remain hidden for weeks before settling into a normal activity pattern.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–29°C, soft, acidic, tannin-stained recommended. Tank: 40 L minimum; fine sand, Indian almond leaves, dense plants, secure lid. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and small live foods. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with all non-predatory species; ideal for Borneo biotopes.
