Neolamprologus multifasciatus
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
Neolamprologus multifasciatus is widely regarded as the world's smallest cichlid, a tiny shell-dweller from the sandy shell fields of Lake Tanganyika that forms fascinating, complex social colonies around empty Neothauma snail shells. Males defend small shell territories and lead groups of smaller females. Observing their intricate social behaviour — digging, shell arrangement, and guarding — makes them endlessly entertaining despite their miniature size. Ideal for nano or species-only setups.
Provide a sand-bottomed aquarium with a large number of empty Neothauma or escargot snail shells (one shell per fish, plus extras). Maintain hard, alkaline water (pH 7.8–9.0, GH 10–20, KH 6–12) mimicking Lake Tanganyika. Feed micro carnivore foods: baby brine shrimp, micro worms, crushed flake. Keep in groups of 6 or more with a male-to-female ratio of 1:2 or 1:3.
