Altolamprologus compressiceps
Also known as: Shell-dwelling Compressiceps, Compressiceps Shell Dweller
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, Africa
The Shell-dwelling Compressiceps is a miniaturised form of Altolamprologus compressiceps that has adapted to life within large empty snail shells in Lake Tanganyika. Despite its small size, it is remarkably bold and will aggressively defend its shell from much larger fish. Its laterally compressed body allows it to slip into shell openings with ease.
Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; stable chemistry important for Tanganyika species. Tank: Minimum 80L; sandy substrate with multiple empty Neothauma or escargot shells. Feeding: Small carnivore foods — frozen mysis, brine shrimp, micro pellets; predatory on tiny invertebrates. Behaviour: Extremely territorial around its shell; pairs form and jointly defend their territory. Compatibility: Tanganyika shell-dweller community; can coexist with Julidochromis or Neolamprologus in larger tanks.
