Nannostomus nitidus
Origin: Amazon basin, Brazil
Nannostomus nitidus (Shining Pencilfish) is a beautiful and moderately rare pencilfish from the Brazilian Amazon, with a golden iridescent sheen along the upper half of its body that contrasts strikingly with a broad black ventral stripe edged in white. From clear and blackwater streams, it thrives in soft, acidic, well-planted aquariums with gentle flow and subdued lighting that showcases its subtle metallic lustre.
Maintain very soft, acidic water (pH 4.5–6.5, GH <5) with some tannin staining from botanicals or peat. Plant densely and provide low to medium lighting. Feed micro-sized live and frozen foods: baby brine shrimp, micro worms, Daphnia, and micro pellets. Keep in groups of 8+ for confident behaviour. Avoid strong currents and boisterous tankmates.
