Cyprinus carpio
Origin: Captive bred (Japan)
Shiro Utsuri displays a bold black body with dramatic white markings that wrap around the head and body in a lacquer-like pattern, creating a striking bi-colour contrast that is highly prized in the Dutch and Belgian koi hobby. The white pattern appears to 'wrap' over the black base, creating a more dramatic three-dimensional appearance than many other koi varieties. Sumi and white balance develops further with age.
Requires a large pond (minimum 2000L given its potential size to 65cm) with excellent filtration. Feed high-quality koi pellets; colour-enhancing foods can improve the contrast of white areas. Regular water quality monitoring is essential — koi are sensitive to ammonia and nitrite spikes. Provide predator protection for valuable specimens. Add pond salt (0.1–0.3%) during spring and after treatments for immune support.
