Oryzias latipes
Also known as: Shiro Medaka, White Medaka, White Japanese Ricefish
Origin: Japan (cultivated variety)
The Shiro ('white') medaka is an albino-type cultivar of Oryzias latipes in which melanophores are largely absent, giving the fish a pure white body that can appear slightly translucent in young individuals. It is as hardy as any other medaka variety and equally suited to outdoor tub keeping as it is to indoor nano aquariums.
Water: 10–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.5; tolerates mild brackish; wide temperature range. Tank: 20 L minimum; white colour looks best over dark substrates with good lighting. Feeding: Omnivorous; medaka pellets, flake, live Daphnia, and frozen foods. Behaviour: Peaceful surface schooler; females carry egg clusters before depositing on plant matter. Compatibility: Compatible with all medaka varieties and other small, peaceful nano fish.
