Apistogramma brevis
Also known as: Short-body Apisto, Brevis Apistogramma
Origin: South America
Apistogramma brevis is one of the smaller members of the genus, reaching only about 5cm in length, making it well-suited to smaller aquarium setups. It hails from the Rio Negro drainage where the water is extremely soft and acidic. Despite its small size it shows the typical Apistogramma breeding behaviour with females turning bright yellow when guarding eggs.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 4.5-6.5, very soft (GH 1-3); RO or blackwater extract recommended. Tank: 40L minimum, dark sand, leaf litter, micro-caves, dense fine-leaved plants. Feeding: omnivore — micro live foods (Artemia nauplii, Cyclops); small cichlid pellets. Behaviour: territorial but small footprint; pair or trio (1M:2F) in species tank. Compatibility: species tank recommended; may pair with small Rio Negro tetras.
