Flowerhorn hybrid (Cichlasomatinae)
Also known as: Short Body Flowerhorn, Balloon Flowerhorn, Balloon Kamfa
Origin: Captive bred (hybrid)
The Short Body Flowerhorn, also referred to as the Balloon Flowerhorn or Balloon Kamfa in some markets, is produced by selecting for a compressed, deep body profile alongside the classic Flowerhorn traits of large kok, pearl scaling, and vivid colouration. The resulting fish has a noticeably shorter body length relative to its height, creating a rounded, egg-shaped silhouette.
Short Body Flowerhorns are controversial in the hobby, with some enthusiasts appreciating the novel form and others concerned about potential health implications of the extreme body compression. Responsible breeders select for body shapes that are proportionate and do not cause organ compression, and fish from reputable sources typically live healthy, active lives.
Despite their smaller size, Short Body Flowerhorns retain full Flowerhorn aggression and interactive personality traits. Their reduced adult size makes them suitable for slightly smaller aquariums than standard Flowerhorn variants.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 7.0–8.0; same requirements as standard Flowerhorns; avoid temperature extremes. Tank: Minimum 250L; single specimen; avoid sharp décor edges that could injure the more rounded body. Feeding: High-quality Flowerhorn pellets sized appropriately; avoid overfeeding which can exacerbate the compressed body form. Breeding: Breeds similarly to standard Flowerhorns; short body trait is heritable; source fish from reputable breeders. Compatibility: Solitary; aggressive despite smaller size.
