Polypterus palmas
Also known as: Shortfin Bichir, Palmas Bichir
Origin: Africa
Polypterus palmas is one of the smaller and more streamlined bichir species, native to coastal river systems of West Africa. It is distinguished from similar species by the notably reduced length of its dorsal fin spines. Relatively peaceful and manageable, it coexists well with other polypterids of similar size.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, adaptable to a range of water hardness. Tank: Minimum 180L, soft fine substrate, hiding spots in driftwood and caves, secure lid. Feeding: Carnivore; live worms, frozen bloodworm, prawn, and sinking pellets. Behaviour: Calm and mostly inactive during the day; active at night and at feeding time. Compatibility: Compatible with most large peaceful or semi-aggressive fish; avoid very small species.
